I believe all types of writing relate to and inform each other – I see this as a perpetual opportunity to learn and grow as a writer.

Clay Shields learned his love of clear, concise copy from a seemingly unrelated genre of writing: poetry. Whether writing a love poem or a blog post, Clay applies the same rigor and is always in search of the perfect phrasing to get his ideas across effectively and elegantly.

Clay has been obsessed with words and what they can do since he can remember. Before he knew the term “vocabulary,” he was already building an impressive one while reading Calvin and Hobbes in the back of his family’s car during road trips.

Assuming he was going to be a lifelong academic, Clay went straight from his undergraduate degree at Transylvania University to a Master’s degree in English literature at the University of Kentucky, where he shared his love of reading and writing with his students, whether they liked it or not. It was there that he started to see a version of himself as a writer outside the Ivory Tower.

Along with other forms of art, Clay has dabbled in journalism, poetry, short fiction, and essay writing.

“I believe all types of writing relate to and inform each other – I see this as a perpetual opportunity to learn and grow as a writer,” he has said. “Just like all writing, composing copy allows me to employ and bolster my communication skills.”

Raised in eastern Kentucky, Clay has never lived outside the commonwealth he calls home. His interests include bicycling, camping, graffiti, and listening to punk rock too loudly.
