10 Dental Website Redesign Must-Haves (part 4)

It’s day 4 of our look at how to redesign your dental website. Today we’re going to talk about some more behind-the-scenes coding stuff. But it’s stuff you’ve got to know if you want to do a good job on your redesign. Stay tuned.

– It’s Colin here on Thursday, March 5.

– This is the second day we’re going to look at programmer stuff that you MUST know if you want to successfully lead your website redesign.

  1. First, let’s talk about URL structure.

– The URL is the full name of the page you are on, such as https://www.smartboxwebmarketing.com/our-team.

– Some websites have URLs with seemingly meaningless numbers and letters tacked on at the end.

– That’s bad.

– Not only is that bad for users, it’s bad for search engines.

– If you’ll notice in the URL I mentioned before, there is a hyphen between our and team.

– Here is why that is important:

– Google can return one or more words in a URL as part of a Google search if the words have hyphens between them.

– If the words have traditional underscores between them, Google only returns results if you search connected words.

– That means using hyphens will get you more search engine results than underscores.

– It also means your URLs should contain your top keywords.

– I bet you didn’t know the names of your pages were so important, did you?

  1. Next, you’ve got to get rid of low-quality sites that have linked to you.

– Normally backlinks are good.

– But your Google Webmaster Tools will show you any penalties derived from low-quality links.

– Those same tools will allow you to essentially disavow yourself of those links.

– Here’s how that happens: Once upon a time, web design firms and marketers would build bunches of backlinks from worthless websites.

– Then Google Penguin came along in 2012 and started penalizing sites for having these low-quality links.

– So you’ve got to get rid of them.

– Again, I don’t expect you to know how to do this yourself.

– But make sure that whoever you hire to do it for you does.

– You don’t have to know how to do it, but you should know the right questions to ask.
