10 Facebook Stats Dentists Need to Know

I came across a graphic recently that called social media “The Rock Star of Online Marketing.” I’m going to tell you why I think that is a 100 percent accurate description when we return.

– Thanks for joining me on this fantastic Saturday, April 4.

– I am Colin Receveur, founder and CEO of SmartBox Web Marketing.

– If you’ve watched this podcast for any length of time, you know I am not a fan of dentists using their time or resources trying to organically chase patients through social media.

– The ROI just isn’t high enough.

– Today I thought I’d share some statistics I have compiled about Facebook and let you make your own decision.

– This came about because of the graphic I saw called “Social Media: The Rock Star of Online Marketing.”

– As soon as I saw that name, I thought: They are exactly right.

– Like most current rock stars, social media’s popularity is based on:

-Hype

-Appearance

-Overproduction

-Zeitgeist (zite-guyst)

– And not on quality or value.

– I don’t mean to sound like an old man saying, “Back in my day, music was music. Today, it’s CRAP.”

– But you can’t compare the music of today to that of previous decades.

– Social media has all those same attributes.

– But you be the judge.

– Here are some social media stats, primarily about Facebook:

  1. There are 1.39 billion active Facebook users worldwide.
  2. 91% of online adults use social media regularly.
  3. 71% of women and 62% of men use social media regularly. I covered how women dominate social media almost a year ago in the May 27 and May 28 Patient Attraction Podcasts.
  4. 38% have recommended a brand they like.

– Sounds pretty good, right? Not so fast.

  1. Only 0.5% of Facebook fans engaged with a brand they “liked.”
  2. Users are on Facebook an average of 6.75 hours PER MONTH. That’s right, across 30 days.
  3. Posting on Facebook only reaches 6 percent of the people who follow your Facebook page. I covered this in a podcast (Patient Attraction Episode 151: Shocking Information About Facebook Marketing) last year as well.
  4. Time magazine reports that number is going to drop to 1 to 2%.
  5. Facebook finished 2014 with $12.5 billion in total revenue.
  6. 90% of that is from ad revenue.

– We use Facebook ads to help dentists market to existing patients.

– But we don’t recommend using Facebook to find new patients.

– People are not on Facebook looking for a dentist.

– Now you have some data, and you can decide whether to follow that advice or not.

– Until tomorrow, keep moving forward.
