4 Tips for Maximizing Your Dental Willpower

Being a small business owner makes a lot of demands on you – on your time, your attention, your energy, and your willpower. With your staff and dental patients depending on you, you can’t afford to fall behind. After the break, I’ll share some tips to help you strengthen your willpower to stay on top of things.

– Over time, you may find that you’re getting worn down.

– Your willpower just isn’t what it used to be.

– Here are some tips for getting your willpower to power back up.

– Tip number 1: Take care of yourself.

– That means getting enough sleep, eating regularly, and making the time to get some exercise.

– Your willpower depends in large part on how your physical body is doing.

– Take care of it, and you’ll find it easier to tackle the thousand-and-one things you have to deal with as the owner of a dental practice.

– Tip number 2: Unplug.

– You can live the job, or you can live.

– You need some away time, some down time, away from dentistry.

– Talk a walk, meditate, work out, read, play a game, spend time with friends.

– You need to recoup the energy you put into your business by recharging your batteries.

– Tip number 3: Prioritize.

– You have only so much willpower in a given day.

– Your dental patients have to come first, but you need to rank your other tasks by time and how much energy they’ll take.

– Schedule the tough ones for when you’re at your best.

– And tip number 4: Commit.

– Some people find that if there’s a self-imposed penalty for not completing a task, their performance improves.

– For you, that might mean missing your favorite TV show, not having dinner out with your spouse, or not buying something that you’ve been wanting.

– Make the penalty meaningful enough that it serves as a motivation.

– Some dentists do better by reducing the demands on their time.

– Let’s say that you’ve got to review your website content and you’re having trouble coming up with ideas.

– Is that a good use of your time, or would you be better off having someone else do it?
