5 Tips for Making Your Dental Website Mobile-Friendly

Yesterday, we talked about how Google is going to hurt your results in mobile searches if you don’t have a mobile-friendly website. Today, I’m going to give you some free IT consulting to make sure that your site is as mobile-friendly as possible. Stay tuned.

– Website design was my first love and that is really how SmartBox got its start.

– I only added the marketing component after I became knowledgeable enough to develop our industry-leading patient attraction system.

– So today I am going back to my roots to give dentists a lesson how to build a mobile-friendly site.

– To recap:

– This is important because Google has placed a renewed emphasis on sites being mobile-friendly.

– When someone uses a smartphone to do a Google search, Google wants to show the most helpful websites.

– This includes sites that will work on the searcher’s smartphone.

Here are the first of 5 tips to help maximize your websites mobile-friendliness:

  1. Check it out on your smartphone.

– Have you ever tried to look at your website on a smartphone?

– Does it appear in a size that is readable and navigable?

– Or does it come in too big where you can only see parts of a page at a time?
– Does it load in a short time or take forever?

  1. If you want to know what google thinks, submit your url to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/ and get Google’s analysis.

– If Google says your website is not mobile-friendly, talk to your webmaster.

– He or she will need to analyze what the problems are and get them corrected.

– But assuming your site is mobile-friendly, let’s do the best we can to also boost the UX, or user experience.

  1. Boost your site’s speed.

– The best way to do this is to minimize file and stylesheet sizes.

– That happens best in the coding, so you probably need your webmaster to handle this.

– But it also includes images.

– There is no need to have images that would fit on a computer monitor or laptop screen on your mobile site.

– Smartphones seem to get bigger every year, but they’re not that big yet!

  1. Make the site legible.

– There is little worse than getting on a mobile site where you have to blow up the screen just to read the text.

– Then you spend your whole time scrolling back and forth to read the copy!

– Also, watch out for Flash and some other plugins like it.

– While some devices now work with these plugins, others don’t.

– Why set yourself up with something that will cause some of your visitors problems?

– Make your buttons big enough to tap.

– This is another pet peeve of mine.

– Sites that have buttons or things you’re supposed to tap that are so small you have to blow up the page to get to them.

– This is the kind of aggravation that can cause someone to leave your site.

  1. That leads me to my final tip: use your Google Webmaster Tools.

– It has all kinds of information that can tell you how well your site is performing.

– But you have to use it.

– If you don’t know how, look it up on Google or ask your webmaster to show you.

– Or wait and maybe I’ll do a podcast on it one day.
