5 Tricks to Boost Your Mobile Dental Website

The future of web marketing is in mobile search. Already more than half of all mobile searches have local intent. Perhaps as early as this year, mobile searches will surpass PC searches. Is your website ready for mobile search. I’ll let you know when we return.

– You might remember that a couple of weeks ago I told you how Google is going to start punishing websites that aren’t mobile-friendly.

– I followed that up with some ways to see if your website is mobile-friendly.

– We had a really good response to those podcasts, so today I am going to give you 5 tips on how to make your website more mobile-friendly.

– Why does this matter?

– 73% of mobile Internet users have gone to a website that was too slow to load.

– 51% of mobile Internet users have gone to a website that crashed, froze, or received an error.

– 38% of mobile Internet users have gone to a website that wasn’t available.

– So let’s get started:

  1. Design for touch.

– Remember, tablets and smartphones work off of touchscreens.

– That means buttons and links need to be big enough for someone to touch to activate.

– Apple recommends 44×44 pixels.

– People are very bad at hitting the mark with their finger, so make sure you give them a visual cue of what they are touching.

– Also make sure that drop-down menus actually drop down on the mobile version when a user touches them.

– Hovering over a drop-down or button isn’t a great option when using a finger instead of a mouse and pointer.

  1. Another aspect of UX, or user experience, is font size and readability.

– You don’t want people to have to zoom in on your page when they are looking for your address or phone number.

– Google recommends fonts be 16 CSS pixels.

– Each pixel is .75 points, so that is a 12-point font if you more familiar with those terms.

  1. Design for user experience as well.

– Apple recommends putting most important information top left corner, and least important information bottom right corner.

– Make your most important pages easiest to get to.

  1. In that same vein, don’t give users too many options.

– People should have 5 or 6 options of what to do when your mobile website comes up.

– It’s fine to have a menu button that has multiple options.

– But that menu button should be one of the 5 or 6 options the user gets upon landing on the site.

  1. Finally, make it as easy for the user to navigate as possible.

– Identify when links are drop-down menus, for instance.

– Three parallel horizontal lines universally means the menu, to reference my earlier example.

– The idea is that you don’t want someone leaving your mobile site because it is too hard to navigate.
