In the decades I have been around dentists and dental practices, I have heard a common cause of a practice’s declining fortunes so often that I have decided to include it on this list a marketing mistake. I’ll tell you what it is when we return.

– Hi Colin here, and let’s jump right into our next common dental marketing mistake.

– How often have you seen a friend quote/unquote “step away” from managing his practice?

– Maybe a parent or spouse got seriously ill or worse, passed away?

– Or the dentist himself was injured or ill.

– Or got divorced.

– On the flip side, maybe the dentist got into a new, serious relationship.

– Or had a kid.

– Or took planned and took an extended anniversary trip or honeymoon.

– No matter what the cause, the dentist mentally checked out from running his practice.

– Oh, he may have shown up to work every day.

– He was there acting more like an associate, seeing patients and planning treatment.

– But that’s all.

– He was working IN the practice, not on the practice.

– Well this is a mistake for the business in every way, including the marketing.

– A dentist would have to have one heck of an office manager, marketing coordinator, or some other staff member to run the show as well as the dentist could or better.

– More likely, you would have the inmates running the asylum.

– Marketing would stagnate.

– New patients would dry up.

– The business would falter.

– And the dentist would be forced to re-engage  to lose his once-prosperous practice.

– Don’t misunderstand what I am saying:

– A dentist should not micromanage every aspect of his business.

– But he needs to be not only present and aware of what is going on in the practice, but leading and directing it.
