You probably remember your ACT or SAT score, or your IQ. You may know whether you are Type A or Type B personality. These are measures of your thinking and your feeling. Today, I want to talk about the third, lesser known part of your personality: your “conative” self. Stay tuned.

– Colin here, and welcome to the Patient Attraction Podcast.

– Today, I want to talk about the work of Kathy Kolbe and her work on conation, or instinctive action patterns.

– You may never have heard of conative behavior.

– But it is equal to your cognitive and affective, or feeling, aspects.

– You probably think about what you know and how you feel about it.

– But what about you willingness to do what needs to be done and how you will go about getting it done?

– That is the conative part of your personality.

– Let me say up front that I have no affiliation with Kathy Kolbe or her company, Kolbe Corp., other than having taken her assessment to see my conative traits.

– Kolbe Indexes measure someone’s instinctive methods for solving problems on a 1-9 scale based on four areas:

-Fact Finder: the instinctive way we gather and share information.

-Follow Thru: the instinctive way we arrange and design.

-Quick Start: the instinctive way we deal with risk and uncertainty.

-Implementor: the instinctive way we handle space and tangibles.

– Here are the average Kolbe scores of dentists:

-Fact Finder: 8, meaning they are more likely to study an issue extensively before taking action.

-Follow Thru: 6, so they document repeatable systems.

-Quick Start: 2, means dentists are likely to stick with what they’re used to – even if they’re not effective.

-Implementor: 4, so dentists are good at both understanding physical problems and creating solutions to those problems.

– Does that sound like you?

– The Follow-Through and Implementer scores work out very well for dentists as practitioners.

– But the Fact Finder and Quick Start scores work out poorly for dentists as businesspeople.

– If you study an issue to death, you are likely to miss opportunity and take too long to make a needed change to your practice.

– The important thing is to know yourself.

– What instinctive traits help you meet your goals and which ones work against you?
