Dentists Shouldn’t Get Penguin-Slapped!

Google’s Penguin algorithm is very vigilant about bad content on web pages. Inbound spam links on your dental web pages are a big red flag, and Penguin will penalize you. Don’t get Penguin-slapped! I’ll explain after the break.

– Welcome to the Patient Attraction Podcast.

– I’m Colin Receveur.

– Google’s Penguin search algorithm was rolled out in April 2012.

– Since then, it’s been refined numerous times.

– Currently, we’re on version 4.2.

– That version was rolled out slowly, beginning in July of last year.

– In my last podcast, I discussed how Google made two changes to its core algorithm in a week’s time.

– It turns out that the SEO mavens anticipate another Penguin update early this year.

– Penguin was originally created to detect bad content.

– That means duplicated and/or unoriginal copy on websites, copy that really isn’t responsive to search queries, and keyword stuffing.

– I mentioned in the previous podcast that people used to cram keywords into web pages to get a higher search ranking, even though the keywords did nothing for the web user’s experience.

– Once Google put a stop to that, spammers tried to buy links or get them through link networks that were designed to “beat” the search protocol.

– An update to Penguin in 2012 freed the bird to go link hunting.

– Now, I don’t think any reputable dentist would knowingly have spam links on their web pages.

– However, inbound links TO your pages are counted as spam and can cause your search ranking to be penalized.

– You might very well have inbound spam links to your site and not know it, particularly if you do your own SEO.

– One of the first things you should do is run a link audit.

– If you have Google Webmaster Tools, you can download a complete file of all inbound links pointing to your site.

– Even more important, you can see how they’re graded by Google.

– If you find spam links leading back to your site, you should first contact the webmaster of those pages to request the link be removed.

– Google offers other options such as the Google Disavow Links Tool.

– Penguin is just one of 200 ranking factors that Google uses.

– If your web pages score high otherwise, running afoul of the Penguin algorithm may not hurt you too much.

– But why take a chance?

– Produce the most relevant, highest-quality content you can, check for spam links, and try to stay abreast of Google’s algorithm changes – including the upcoming Penguin update.
