It’s a brave new world, even in the business of dentistry, and some of the old models are falling by the wayside. Yesterday’s top-down reporting model is giving way to a team approach. For Millennials, who are less used to and less comfortable with heavy management oversight, teams may result in higher employee engagement. I’ll be back after the break to tell you more.

– Millennials are people born between roughly 1978 and 2000.

– There are some 76 million Millennials in the U.S.

– As time goes on, dental practices will be employing more and more Millennials.

– Many of them are different from the generations that came before.

– For one thing, they tend to job hop more.

– A big reason for that is their expectation that work has to be rewarding and enjoyable.

– They have a relatively low tolerance for routine – and almost none for micromanagement.

– A team approach as opposed to top-down management can offer a greater degree of autonomy and promote employee engagement.

– Single dentist practices likely have few enough employees that they’ll constitute a single team.

– Larger practices, though, may have several teams.

– According to Gallup research, clarity and accountability in team roles promote engagement and high performance.

– What’s important is to make job and role expectations clear for Millennial employees.

– Then you can turn them loose with minimal oversight … but with oversight.

– While this isn’t guaranteed, you might be surprised how well they do and the creativity they bring to improving their roles.

– That’s largely how I run my company, and I’m constantly amazed at how my employees go above and beyond.

– And constantly suggest improvements.

– Engaged, happy dental practice employees are a major part of your dental marketing.

– They have contact with both current and prospective patients, depending on their roles.

– They can make or break your practice.

– But an even more important factor that determines employee engagement is the attitude and competent leadership of the boss.

– Hire the best people you can and then trust them with a good deal of autonomy.

– Engaged employees help you keep your existing dental patients and get more.
