Today’s hot-ticket item is tomorrow’s yawn, and that includes social media. If your dental market demographics skew toward younger people, you should know about a recent finding regarding Facebook. Stay tuned. I’ll be back after the break to run it down for you.

– Facebook is still the dominant social media platform, but there are indications that this may be changing.

– That’s particularly the case among younger people, including future dental patients.

– They’re moving away from Facebook to other social media platforms like Snapchat, Pinterest, and Instagram.

– Those platforms tend to attract different audiences.

– Instagram seems to have a fairly broad appeal.

– But Snapchat is popular with teens, while Pinterest appeals far more to women, although men are catching up.

– And Facebook itself isn’t what it used to be.

– Facebook’s algorithms limit your reach to 6 percent of your dental Facebook page followers, or even less.

– In fact, your reach may be headed to nearly zero.

– It’s pretty much a pay-to-play platform now.

– I’ve never said that dentists should invest their marketing dollars heavily in social media.

– The ROI is just too hard to track accurately.

– And now, with the social media base splintering among different platforms, determining ROI will be harder than ever.

– If social media is a key part of your dental marketing, you’re still better off with Facebook.

– Provided you pay to play.

– You can target your Facebook prospects by location, which is invaluable because dentistry is local.

– But you can also target by demographics, behaviors, interests, and connections.

– Facebook is still dominant, but its base is beginning to splinter.

– Keep close track of future developments or tune into our podcast regularly.
