Why Dental Websites Need to be Mobile-Friendly

How has your business fared since Google started penalizing mobile-unfriendly websites earlier this year? We’ll talk about it when we return.

– Hi, welcome to the Saturday edition of the Patient Attraction Podcast.

– I am Colin Receveur, founder and CEO of SmartBox Web Marketing.

– Back in April, Google started to punish websites that are not mobile-friendly by lowering their rankings in mobile search results.

– I told you about it back in March and have talked about it so much that this may seem like one of our Wayback Wednesday, Throwback Thursday or Flashback Friday episodes, but it is not.

– If you are not sure whether your site is mobile-friendly, go to www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/.

– I continue to hear from dentist about not understanding why their website wasn’t mobile-friendly in the first place and wondering why it is such a big deal.

– Let’s talk about the latter first.

– According to data from the Pew Research Center, 84 percent of people use their smartphone for Internet browsing every day.

– This means they are looking for goods and services, including a dentist, on their smartphone.

– You might also remember that I told you about six weeks ago that Google says mobile searches outnumber PC searches.

– So that means more people are looking for a dentist on a smartphone than on a computer.

– If your website doesn’t load quickly and isn’t easy to navigate on a smartphone, you’re in trouble.

– As for why your website company might have designed you with a mobile-incompatible site, there are lots of reasons.

– If your website is old, it may simply predate the need for mobile compatibility.

– If it is newer, you web design company may not have been that forward thinking.

– There really are two types of mobile-friendly websites:

  1. Responsive: This means your website changes size no matter what device someone is using.
  2. Mobile: This means it is built specifically for each type of device that views it.

– Well, if you have a mobile site, it can be hard to keep up with all the changes and new devices, etc.

– Fortunately, my company has been building responsive websites for quite some time, so our clients haven’t had to worry about this penalty.

– This is different from some of our competitors, who are scrambling to update their clients’ websites.
